Michael Bay Adds Malcovich, McDormand, Jeong to Transformers 3
And it begins. If the onslaught of news and marketing surrounding Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is any indicator, we're about to step into over a years worth of casting news, effects statistics, story updates, and Michael Bay talking at length about just how awesome he is. Today marks the first big update from the director, who finally made time in his busy schedule of douche bagging to update his personal blog.
The update is punctuated with big names added to the cast of the upcoming as-yet-unsubtitled Transformers 3. The Coen Bros go to leading lady Frances McDormand, Con-Air star John Malkovich, and the up and coming Ken Jeong have all found themselves drowning in the Bay of Michael. There were no announcements as to what role they'd be playing, but you can infer a few things from these casting choices. First, Bay is looking to boost the credibility of his film by adding a few bigger names to his cast in McDormand and Malkovich. After Revenge was a critical flop, Bay is surely hoping that getting some real acting talent on board will make the film less laughable.
Second, this film is going to be funny. You don't add Ken Jeong to your cast unless you're looking for some off-the-wall antics and a slightly mock-racist Asian accent. He's been thoroughly rocking his recurring roll as El Tigre in NBC's latest break out comedy Community, and his cameos in the most recent wave of R-rated comedies have unanimously stolen the show. Here's hoping that he'll do the voice for the next unabashedly racist Transformer, Slant Eyes, who turns from a giant robotic noodle chef into a broken down rickshaw.
This combo will most definitely make for some interesting interactions in Transformers 3, especially if they wind up in main roles. Unfortunately, since Michael Bay couldn't write one paragraph without talking about how awesome he and his deal with Ferrari are, we didn't get any real details out of him. Maybe soon though. Keep checking back.
