Orphanage remake lands director
In yet another display of Americanizing great foreign films in the interest of profit, Spanish made The Orphanage is getting the McDonald's treatment and while it's being produced by Spanish mega film maker Guillermo del Toro, I'm still appalled that this is even happening. Either way, Larry Fessenden is signed on to direct, having directed Wendigo and The Last Winter, two flicks I can't comment on unfortunately. He's been hand selected by Guillermo del Toro himself so that bodes well for the guy even though I've never seen his work.
The Orphanage was released in 2007, barely 2 years ago, whichs begs the question: Why is this necessary at all? How about you spend way fewer bucks and promote the foreign version and give it a wide domestic release? Or maybe you could just leave it alone for a while and hope that word of mouth will get around and you'll make some DVD dollars.
It's 2 years old. Nothing about it is going to be changed other than the spoken language and I'm sure they are going to take the subtleties of the original and spell them out for you, just like Quarantine which was released just 1 year after [REC], an infinitely better film. There's been no great advances in technology, there's no effects that will be bettered by the refilming of this, it's just for money, and it pisses me off.
Rant over, Seacrest out!
Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, and an inaccurate synopsis of the film.
