Lazy Hollywood: Zombie remaking The Blob
After two mediocre runs at revamping the Halloween series, can we all just collectively tell Rob Zombie to "STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM OUR HORROR CLASSICS!" Maybe after he inevitably screws The Blob all to hell some studios will get the picture. How about instead of remaking The Blob, we let Zombie remake 1985's The Stuff about some killer yogurt? Better plan.
The original Blob came out in 1958 followed by a remake in 1988, both of which had a giant gelatinous mass land on Earth and start absorbing any humans it came in contact with, growing exponentially after each "feeding". With a remake already on the books for this one, it's hard to see where Zombie will go with it. Thankfully he gave us an idea when he talked to Variety:
My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.
So if he's already abandoning the main plot point of The Blob, then the real question for Zombie is why he doesn't just take some influence from it and write a completely new movie that he can call his own? Devil's Rejects was a visually striking, and unique film with an intriguing story, and I even liked House of 1000 Corpses, so why not go for something along those lines instead of warping a classic into something not at all representative of what it was?
This remake phenomenon doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. There's bound to be untapped original material in Rob Zombie's mind that I'm sure he'd rather make than be constrained to previous conventions. Plus every time "The Blob" is mentioned now I can't not think of Kevin Durand's awful character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
So do you think Shari Moon-Zombie will play the Blob? I hope so.

This is interesting. I actually watched, and enjoyed, the original in a history class back in high school. Viva la lazy teachers on a rainy day... At any rate, the new "Blob" is going to be a gore-fest. I'm actually looking forward to this, unlike the past two "Halloween" remakes.
