James Cameron and the Useless Endeavor

Apparently James Cameron recently endorsed Panasonic's new 3D TVs, giving them an added boost over companies like Sony and Samsung who are also producing similar products.

The deal disclosed Friday comes as Cameron and Twentieth Century Fox are aiming to break new ground with the release of "Avatar," a movie shot entirely in 3D.

Am I the only one who doesn't need 3D in my home? And what exactly is different about these 3D TVs since I still have to wear a ridiculous pair of uncomfortable glasses in order to experience the 3D? This seems lke such a useless product, but an intriguing one. Saying that they hope to break new ground maybe means that they are trying something different to improve the 3D experience as a whole, in which case I might actually be interested. However, think back to the 90's when TGIF had shows like Dinosaurs and Home Improvement. There was a special week where ABC must have gotten their hands on a 3D rig and just filmed their four shows line up for 3D, shipping 4 pair of glasses with each TV Guide. No special TV needed, and back then there was no widescreen TV, just big ass tubes and stylish red and blue glasses.

Getting popular interest in this sort of thing up is going to be an uphill battle. To a lot of people, going to the movies is an event in and of itself and adding 3D to it makes it more special. Bringing that effect to the home will surely take away a lot of that feeling, decreasing what little interest there already is for 3D. I don't think they'll increase interest, by bringing 3D to homes, just spread it all out.

i was skeptical when i heard about the 3d tvs. until i went to some tech expo in orlando a month or so ago. the samsung 3d tv caught my eye. walking thru the room about to burst from a nerd overload i caught a glimpse. no glasses required. just watch tv like the normal lazy people we are except in 3d. this is awesome for movies but i'm not sure i want to watch all of my tv shows in 3d. very cool concept though. i don't think it'll be long before you see these become more consumer friendly.
also worth noting from the expo was one companies version of microsofts touch screen table. way less expensive (still more than i want to spend) a little behind from the professional version but still really cool.
