Neill Blomkamp probably not doing HALO

South African film-maker Neil Blomkamp has spent a bit of time getting nice and tight with Kiwi man-god Peter Jackson. Their storied pairing started with a failed attempt to get a movie based on the inexplicably popular Halo video game series of the ground, going so far as to have Blomkamp direct some shorts to sell the project.

Sadly, the idea went up in flames after budget problems, but from the ashes rose District 9, a Jackson produced Blomkamp directed project that is sure to be my favorite movie of the year.

Having screened for the first time at SDCC yesterday, Neill Blomkamp himself was on hand to talk and David Chen over at /film was able to catch up with him and chat him up about possibly going back to Halo. And unfortunately, it doesn't look good.

When asked what would happen if the project got back under way and they approached him with it, he said:

The answer is, I probably wouldn’t do Halo if it was offered to me. But creatively, I would like to do it. It’s kind of like I’d be sad to not work on it, but I would still say no.

This is sad news for Halo fans as a Blomkamp directed adaptation would have at least had some style and felt very real, like all of his work does. He ususes the word 'probably' a lot so I'm not counting him out just yet, but I'm not going to keep my hopes up.

He has a little more to say on the subject, and /film will be posting the full interview later on, so head on over and check out their coverage from Comic Con.
