Sony Picks Up the Rights to Risk...Ugh

The peak of ridiculousness was reached in July when the film rights to both Asteroids, the "you're a ship and shoot rocks" video game from the 80's, and the kid's toy Viewmaster were picked up. But just because those acquisitions set the standard in idiocy, there are still studios out there trying to out-dumb them.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Sony Pictures has conquered the rights to the always fun board game Risk, adding to the ever growing list of board game films in development. Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures somehow thinks that because Transformers and G.I. Joe did well, a Risk movie, with all the action and adventure in the board game (/sarcasm), will also be successful. And you know what, he's probably right. Even though there's a billion other movies about war that are put together exactly the same way this one will be, people will probably still flock to it with nostalgia goggles irremovably welded their faces.

Not too many details about where the film will go have been revealed, presumably because some Sony employee was at Walmart looking at toys because they can't come up with their own ideas, spotted the giant red letters on the box, and immediately fired up his blue tooth yelling, "RISK!" as loudly and intrusively as possible. More on this as it develops.
