Chris Pine ready to be the new Clancy poster child

If you've managed to miss movies based on Tom Clancy novels for the past 19 years, you are missing out. They are truly smart action movies, steering entirely clear of extraneous bullshit and fully immersing you in deep, politically charged stories that just happen to include some fancy 'splosions.

There have been four movies starring Jack Ryan, but never more than twice has any one actor stepped into the legendary CIA analyst's pressed suit; that honor goes to Harrison Ford. With plenty more books to draw from, Chris Pine is making a healthy run at taking the reigns. Paramount is deep in talks with the new face of Captain Kirk in hopes of re-booting the series with a young and willing actor who will be able to stick the role for many years to come. With Star Trek also housed at Paramount, they're playing their cards close to the vest.

Having just refreshed myself on the 1990 series launcher The Hunt for Red October, news of giving this series a fresh start has me all kind of giddy, and now I'm thinking about the director who owns the political thriller market, Ridley Scott. That's not a real rumor or anything, just me flexing my geek muscles and hoping that someone else will think putting Jack Ryan in Scott's hands is a good idea.

The deal is just in negotiations so nothing is quite confirmed yet, but with the possibility this series has to make metric shit tons of dollars, it's hard to believe that either party would let this slip away. Pine has proved himself as an action star with Star Trek, so putting him on the top line of this fresh series is about as good a choice as they could make.
